Applications
- The main purpose of acetonitrile is as a solvent. For example, as a solvent for extracting butadiene. A solvent for synthetic fibers. A solvent for special coatings.
- Used in the petroleum industry to remove tar, phenol and other solvents from petroleum hydrocarbons.
- Used in the oil industry as a solvent for extracting fatty acids from animal and vegetable oils.
- It is used as a reaction medium for the recrystallization of steroid drugs in medicine. Acetonitrile is an intermediate of medicine (vitamin B1) and perfume. It is a raw material for the manufacture of s-triazine nitrogen fertilizer synergist. It is also used as a denaturant for alcohol.
